Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, alongside Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, recently announced in a press conference that consumers in Punjab using up to 500 electricity units will receive a subsidy of Rs. 14 per unit on their electricity bills.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised this initiative by the Punjab government, and Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar also remarked that Nawaz Sharif works for the welfare of the people.
However, this relief of Rs. 14 per unit from the Punjab government will only be available to consumers using between 201 and 500 units per month.
Those using 200 units or less will not receive this relief, as electricity prices for them were not increased in the first place.
The relief announced by the Punjab government will be applicable in the electricity bills for August and September for consumers using between 201 and 500 units.
This exclusion of consumers using less than 200 units has raised questions among the public, especially those who fall just below this threshold.
While the government’s intention is to assist those facing higher electricity costs, the decision leaves out a significant portion of the population, who will not benefit from this specific relief.
