US President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries and diesel facilities as fuel supplies tighten and diesel prices in the United States reach record levels.

Trump said Ukraine could continue targeting other military sites but should avoid facilities that produce diesel fuel.
“Don’t hit diesel fuel. That’s hurting the world,” Trump said during a visit to Ireland. He argued that attacks on Russian fuel facilities were adding to pressure on an already strained global diesel market.
Ukraine has carried out repeated drone attacks on Russian oil refineries and other energy facilities. Kyiv has argued that Russia’s energy infrastructure helps finance its war effort.
The attacks have reduced Russian refining capacity and contributed to fuel shortages inside Russia. Moscow has also restricted diesel exports in an effort to protect domestic supplies.
US diesel price crosses $6
The average US diesel price has passed $6 a gallon for the first time, adding to pressure on American businesses and consumers.
Diesel is widely used by trucks, ships, trains, farms and heavy machinery. Higher diesel prices can therefore increase the cost of transporting food, goods and other products.
US diesel inventories are also below their normal level for this time of year, while refined fuel supplies in several major markets remain tight.
The pressure is not coming from the Ukraine war alone.
The conflict involving Iran has also disrupted oil supplies and shipping routes in the Middle East. Oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have faced major disruption, while attacks on energy infrastructure have added to concerns about global supplies.
Brent crude has recently traded above $107 a barrel, while US crude has also remained above $100.
Global diesel supplies under pressure
The combination of damaged refineries, export restrictions and problems with oil transportation has created a serious squeeze in the global diesel market.
Russia is an important diesel exporter, but repeated Ukrainian attacks have damaged refinery operations. Russia has also restricted some diesel exports to protect its domestic market.
Even if attacks on Russian energy facilities decrease, repairs could take months because some damaged refineries require specialized equipment and technical support.
The United States is also looking at ways to increase domestic refining capacity as fuel prices remain high.
For consumers, the impact goes beyond the price paid at a fuel station. Higher diesel costs can raise transportation and farming expenses and eventually push up the prices of food and other everyday goods.
