Portugal’s football sensation and former Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo, is reportedly taking legal action against Juventus over £17 million in unpaid wages.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ronaldo has indicated that he previously discussed the matter with the Turin Prosecutor’s Office and decided to proceed legally after those conversations.
The five-time Ballon d’Or recipient had previously agreed to defer his salary from the Italian club during the pandemic to assist with their financial difficulties.
The unpaid wages stem from the period when Juventus, like all soccer clubs, faced the challenges of Covid-19 outbreaks, leading to matches being played behind closed doors for most of the 2020-21 season.
In 2020, Juventus took measures to address the financial strain by reaching agreements with players to delay certain payments. A similar situation unfolded in 2021. These cost-cutting measures affected players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now pursuing legal action against the club for more than $20 million in unpaid wages during that period. Other players on the team, such as Paulo Dybala, faced similar legal disputes with the Italian side, with Dybala reaching an agreement with the club last year for around €3 million.
According to Sports Mediaset, an “economic agreement” between both parties regarding this matter has yet to be reached.
