Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Retirement from International Football

Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary career representing Portugal for more than two decades.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday through an emotional video shared on his Instagram account. In the video, Ronaldo read a farewell letter to his fans and confirmed his decision to step away from the national team.

Ronaldo also spoke about handing back Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt, which he wore for 23 years. He described the decision as difficult, explaining that it was not made only with his mind but also with his heart.

During his international career, Ronaldo made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored a record 146 goals, making him the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer.

One of the biggest achievements of his career came in 2016 when he helped Portugal win the UEFA European Championship, marking the country’s first major international trophy. He also contributed to Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo thanked his teammates, coaches, medical staff, family and supporters for being part of his journey. He expressed pride in representing his country and said that Portugal would always remain in his heart.

His announcement follows a difficult period involving disagreements with Portugal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, after Ronaldo left the national team’s training camp in September.

Although Ronaldo is retiring from international football, his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr is separate from this decision.

His departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Portuguese football history, leaving behind records and achievements that will be remembered for generations.
