US President Donald Trump expressed surprise on Monday, September 28, after British police released five men on bail who were arrested over an alleged terrorist plot targeting a UK airbase used by American forces.
The suspects were arrested early Sunday near Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwest England. The military base has been used by US bombers for operations against Iran since March.
The five men, all British nationals in their twenties from London, were detained on suspicion of explosives offenses and preparing a terrorist act. Police began investigating after reports of three suspicious white vans near the base.
British counter-terrorism police confirmed on Monday that the suspects had been released on bail following extensive interviews and investigations. Authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that the men are subject to strict bail conditions.
