A newborn died during delivery at a private hospital in Karachi’s Mahmoodabad after suffering a neck injury allegedly caused by a sharp instrument, police said.
KARACHI: A newborn baby died during delivery at a private hospital in Karachi’s Mahmoodabad area after sustaining an injury to the neck.
According to the family, the newborn’s neck was allegedly cut by a sharp instrument during the delivery, resulting in the baby’s death.
The newborn’s paternal uncle, Ashraf, said his younger brother, Ameen, was expecting the birth of his child. He said Ameen works as a bus driver and is the father of five children.
Ashraf said the family is poor and does not want to pursue legal action or have the newborn’s body undergo a post-mortem examination.
He alleged that hospital staff informed the family around half an hour after the delivery that the baby had been stillborn. However, when the family saw the body, they noticed an apparent sharp-instrument injury on the baby’s neck, with blood coming from the wound.
The uncle said the family was taking the body home and did not want to subject the newborn to further distress, but urged authorities to take action against hospitals where such incidents occur.
Police transferred the newborn’s body to Jinnah Hospital for legal proceedings.
