England have appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach, while Joe Root has been reinstated as Test captain in a sweeping leadership reset following a difficult period for the national side.
Fleming, 53, replaces Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed from the Test coaching role earlier this month after a disappointing run of results and several off-field controversies. McCullum will, however, continue to oversee England’s white-ball teams.
Root, 35, returns to the captaincy following Ben Stokes’ surprise retirement from international cricket in June. The Yorkshire batter previously led England in 65 Test matches between 2017 and 2022, guiding the team to a then-record 27 victories.
The appointments come as England seek to rebuild after their strong early momentum under McCullum faded. Following an impressive start that saw England win 10 of McCullum’s first 12 Tests, the team has struggled for consistency, losing 18 of their last 37 matches and failing to win a multi-match Test series since December 2024.
Fleming, regarded as one of the most successful coaches in franchise cricket, has never previously served as head coach of an international side. He enjoyed remarkable success with Chennai Super Kings, leading the Indian Premier League franchise to a record five IPL titles during his 17-year tenure.
Speaking after his appointment, Fleming described the role as one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket.
“I’m incredibly excited to be taking on this role. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed,” he said.
The former New Zealand skipper will not take charge immediately. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will oversee England during the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, which begins on Aug. 19, while Fleming spends time with his family in New Zealand before relocating to England later this summer. His first assignment is expected to be preparations for England’s Test tour of South Africa in December.
Root welcomed the appointment, calling the opportunity to work alongside Fleming “a huge motivator.”
“He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment,” Root said.
Fleming praised Root as “a generational talent” and expressed confidence that the experienced batter could flourish in his second spell as captain.
“I’m excited to support him so he can enjoy and thrive in the role in what is a different context to his first stint,” Fleming said.
Root remains England’s leading Test run-scorer with 14,114 runs and sits second on the all-time Test batting list behind India’s Sachin Tendulkar.
Fleming brings extensive international experience to the role, having played 111 Tests for New Zealand, scoring 7,172 runs at an average of 40.06. He also remains the Black Caps’ most successful Test captain with 28 wins in 80 matches. During his playing career, he also represented Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire in English county cricket, winning the County Championship with Nottinghamshire in 2005.
England’s leadership reshuffle follows a turbulent few months that included a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, a home Test series loss to New Zealand and the retirement of Stokes during the deciding Test at Trent Bridge.
Despite stepping away from international cricket, Stokes has been backed by Australia coach Andrew McDonald to make a sensational return for next year’s Ashes, although no such plans have been announced.
With Fleming now in charge and Root back as captain, England hope the new leadership partnership can restore stability and return the Test side to winning ways after an extended period of inconsistency.
