A celebration following Mexico’s historic FIFA World Cup victory turned tragic after three people lost their lives due to suffocation during large public gatherings in the Mexican capital.
According to officials, the incident occurred around the famous Angel of Independence monument and Paseo de la Reforma, where thousands of football fans had gathered to celebrate Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.
Medical authorities said emergency teams provided treatment to several people who lost consciousness at different locations during the celebrations. Despite their efforts, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman could not be saved.
Later, a 48-year-old woman who had suffered suffocation was taken to a hospital, where she died during treatment.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged citizens to celebrate responsibly on such occasions. She called on people to exercise caution and show consideration for others while taking part in public celebrations.
Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador marked the country’s first victory in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage in 40 years. Following the historic result, large numbers of supporters took to the streets across the country, particularly in Mexico City, to celebrate the achievement.
The festive atmosphere, however, turned into a tragic incident during the celebrations, resulting in the deaths of three people. Authorities confirmed that the victims died due to suffocation during the gathering.
