Pakistan has announced its 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, with fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi appointed captain in a move that has already triggered major debate across cricket circles.
While Shaheen remains one of Pakistan’s biggest match-winners with the ball, questions continue to surround whether the left-arm pacer is physically and mentally ready to lead Pakistan in the demanding 50-over format.
Cricket experts and former players are openly discussing whether Shaheen possesses the stamina to consistently bowl 10 overs at high pace while maintaining swing, aggression, and variation — especially under the additional pressure of captaincy.
The pacer’s recent injury history has added to those concerns. Shaheen has battled knee and fitness problems over the last two years, leading some analysts to wonder whether leadership responsibilities could affect his bowling rhythm and effectiveness.
Beyond his on-field performance, whispers about Shaheen’s relationship with Pakistani coaches and team management have resurfaced since his appointment. Though no official disputes have been publicly confirmed, discussions about dressing-room dynamics and communication gaps continue to circulate within cricket circles.
The return of Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Sufyan Muqeem has added further excitement to the squad announcement, with fans hopeful the experienced core can stabilize the team ahead of future ICC events.
Pakistan has also named Salman Ali Agha as vice-captain, signaling the selectors’ confidence in his growing leadership role within the side.
Youngsters Ahmad Daniyal, Irfat Minhas, and Rohail Nazir have earned maiden ODI call-ups, while Mohammad Ghazi Ghori and Rohail Nazir have been included as wicketkeeper-batters.
Meanwhile, Usman Khan misses the series due to illness, while Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub continue rehabilitation from injuries.
Several notable players, including Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Rizwan, Wasim Junior, and Saad Masood, have been dropped from the squad.
The three-match ODI series against Australia will be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore from May 30 to June 4, and is expected to serve as an important test for Pakistan’s new-look leadership group.
