A suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic has killed three people and sickened others, prompting a WHO investigation and raising global health concerns.

A suspected outbreak of the rare hantavirus infection aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has left at least three people dead, and several others ill, health authorities confirmed.
The World Health Organization said investigations are underway after at least one confirmed case of the virus was detected on the Dutch-flagged vessel MV Hondius, currently stationed off Cape Verde.
Officials said the fatalities include an elderly couple, while another patient remains in intensive care in a South African hospital. Two additional symptomatic individuals onboard, reportedly crew members, are awaiting evacuation for urgent medical treatment.
The cruise ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, has been denied permission for passengers to disembark as local authorities assess the situation.
What is hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly infection spread primarily through contact with infected rodents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness, or hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which affects the kidneys. While infections are uncommon, they can be fatal without early medical intervention.
Timeline of the outbreak
The ship began its journey in Argentina around three weeks ago, visiting Antarctica and the Falkland Islands before heading across the Atlantic.
- The first victim, a 70-year-old man, died on board and was later offloaded at Saint Helena
- His wife collapsed while traveling in South Africa and died shortly after
- A third death has been reported on board the vessel
Authorities say around 150 passengers and dozens of crew members were on the ship at the time.
Global health response
The WHO said it is working closely with national authorities and the ship’s operator to conduct a full public health risk assessment, including laboratory testing and contact tracing.
South Africa’s health officials have also initiated tracing efforts to identify potential exposures among individuals who may have come into contact with infected passengers.
Why this matters
The incident has raised fresh concerns about disease control in confined environments like cruise ships, where infections can spread rapidly.
👉 As investigations continue, a key question remains: could this rare virus pose a broader risk beyond the ship?
