Xabi Alonso has stepped down as head coach of Real Madrid after just seven months in charge, the club confirmed on Monday, a day after their defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.
Real Madrid said the decision to part ways with the former midfielder was reached by mutual agreement, bringing a brief and closely scrutinized managerial stint to an early end.
Alonso leaves with Madrid sitting second in the LaLiga standings at the midway point of the season, four points behind leaders Barcelona. Despite remaining in the title race domestically, recent performances and the Super Cup loss intensified pressure on the club’s hierarchy to reassess its direction.
In Europe, Madrid are seventh in the Champions League table after winning four of their six group-stage matches and losing two. While the results kept the club in contention, they fell short of the high standards traditionally expected at the Santiago Bernabéu.

In an official statement, Real Madrid paid tribute to Alonso’s legacy, both as a coach and as a former player who enjoyed a distinguished career at the club.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club,” the statement read. “Real Madrid will always be his home.”
The club also expressed gratitude to Alonso and his technical staff for their professionalism and commitment during their time in charge, wishing them success in the next phase of their careers.
Álvaro Arbeloa, another Real Madrid great and former Castilla coach, has been appointed as the new first-team manager as Los Blancos look to steady their season and build for the future.
