A deadly gas cylinder explosion in Islamabad’s Sector G-7/2 has claimed at least eight lives, including a newlywed couple, with gas load shedding emerging as a key factor behind the tragedy and raising serious questions about the responsibility of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).
According to initial reports, the blast occurred inside a residential house due to gas leakage. Residents said a matchstick was struck after gas accumulated inside the home, triggering a powerful explosion that destroyed three houses and damaged several nearby buildings.
Rescue and emergency teams rushed to the scene and pulled 16 people from the rubble. Eleven injured victims were shifted to a nearby hospital, where the condition of several remained critical. Authorities later confirmed that two more injured persons succumbed to their wounds, taking the death toll to eight.
Among the deceased were groom Shehri and bride Nayab, who had returned home late at night after wedding celebrations. Officials said the couple had arrived around 1:30 am, while a gas heater remained on inside the house. Due to gas load shedding, the heater went off, but gas reportedly continued to leak, filling the room. When a flame was lit later, the accumulated gas exploded, turning their first day of married life into their last.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sahibzada Yousaf said the explosion was reported at 7:19 pm, and rescue teams and police immediately began operations. The area was sealed, while gas and electricity supply were suspended as a precaution.
The incident has sparked public anger over persistent gas load shedding and alleged safety lapses. Residents and observers are questioning whether the tragedy was solely due to household negligence or if prolonged gas outages, system pressure issues, and lack of safety awareness by SNGPL played a critical role.
As investigations continue, the deaths have once again highlighted the deadly consequences of gas load shedding, unsafe supply systems, and the absence of effective public safety measures, leaving grieving families demanding accountability and answers.
