Lahore has revealed that the estimated cost of organizing a three-day Basant festival in Lahore will reach nearly Rs1 billion, making it one of the most expensive cultural events in recent years. Authorities have decided to decorate the city “like a bride,” with large-scale lighting, colorful decorations, and citywide beautification measures planned across major roads, rooftops, and public spaces.
To encourage public participation, the administration has also announced free public transport for citizens during the Basant celebrations. Officials say the move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion while ensuring easy access to festival locations throughout Lahore.
Based on experiences from previous Basant seasons, the administration has begun implementing a comprehensive security, traffic, and surveillance plan. Special monitoring teams have been activated to ensure safety, crowd control, and compliance with regulations. Traffic diversion plans and emergency response units are also being finalized to avoid disruption in daily life.
For organized participation, registration fees ranging from Rs1,000 to Rs5,000 have been introduced for sponsors, traders, and buyers. Authorities confirmed that more than 400 kite makers have already registered through the official online Basant portal, indicating strong commercial interest in the festival.
Under the Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance, the use of spools (charkhi) and sharp or chemical-coated kite strings is strictly prohibited. Only approved and safe materials will be permitted to prevent accidents and fatalities.
