Vote counting is underway in Israel after polling ended in the general elections.
According to various exit polls, there will be no clear winner in the elections. Some polls suggest that the opposition alliance could hold a slight lead over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc.
The opposition alliance could win 52 or 53 seats, while Netanyahu’s bloc could secure 50 seats.
Another exit poll suggests that Netanyahu’s bloc and that of his rival, Gadi Eisenkot, are tied, while one poll indicates a lead for Netanyahu’s alliance.
Arab parties are also expected to perform strongly. With Arab supporters turning out in large numbers, the Ra’am and Joint List parties could win 18 seats.
Eisenkot told the defence establishment that Netanyahu had lost public confidence, saying that Israeli voters had voted for change and against Netanyahu.
According to a news agency, it could take several days for the final election results to be announced. Forming a government could also take a long time, during which Netanyahu will remain in power as caretaker prime minister.
It is worth noting that a majority of at least 61 seats is required to form a government in Israel’s 120-seat parliament.
