President Emmanuel Macron has sparked anger by attending an Elton John concert in Paris amidst ongoing riots in France following the tragic police killing of a teenage delivery driver.
In the past four days, violent protests have erupted, leading to the arrest of numerous individuals. The unrest was triggered by the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy named Nahel M, who was of North African descent, by a police officer in the suburb of Nanterre.
The teenager had attempted to flee from the officers who were attempting to apprehend him. Despite the large number of arrests and the fires raging on the streets of France, Macron and his wife, Brigitte, chose to attend the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour of renowned British singer Elton John at the Accor Arena in Paris.
Footage captured the President tapping his foot along to the 76-year-old pianist’s performance of popular songs such as “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” and “Burn Down the Mission”. According to The Independent, Thierry Mariani, a Member of the European Parliament representing Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, criticized President Macron, labeling his actions as “utterly irresponsible.”
Mariani, quoting from Ecclesiastes, remarked, “Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child.” He further added, “While France was engulfed in flames, Macron chose to applaud Elton John.”
Numerous social media users expressed their disapproval of the President’s behavior, with one stating, “The timing is completely wrong,” and another declaring, “Macron has sunk to a new low.”
Another user wrote, “While a child lost his life under his government’s watch, he indulges in entertainment. Absolutely disgraceful.”
