Rudy Giuliani’s sharp criticism of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani — branding him a “communist” and “security threat” — triggers a fierce debate over political polarization and New York’s shifting power balance

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has unleashed a blistering verbal attack on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and a “serious security threat to the United States of America,” in comments that many are now calling inflammatory and divisive.
Giuliani’s six-word “advice” — “Step down and do something else” — delivered in an interview with The New York Post on Monday, has ignited a political storm in the Big Apple, just days after Mamdani’s historic victory as the city’s first Muslim mayor.
“My advice to him is to step down and do something else,” said Giuliani, branding the 34-year-old progressive lawmaker “a communist — right out of Karl Marx.” The former Republican mayor, once hailed as “America’s Mayor” after 9/11, went further — accusing Mamdani of sympathizing with Muslim extremism after being photographed alongside Imam Suraj Wahhaj, a controversial Brooklyn cleric.
“I’m not worried that he’s a Muslim,” Giuliani added. “I’m worried that he supports Muslim extremism.”
Political observers say Giuliani’s remarks highlight New York’s deepening ideological divide and the growing tension between old-guard conservatism and the city’s progressive wave. “When a former mayor tells an incoming one to ‘step down’ before even taking office, it speaks volumes about the political polarization gripping the city,” said one New York analyst.
Giuliani also questioned whether Mamdani could ever qualify for federal security clearance, claiming he poses a “serious threat to the United States.” He further accused the mayor-elect of antisemitism, citing Mamdani’s support for the BDS movement and his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Israel seems like an obsession with him,” Giuliani charged. “The BDS movement wants to wipe out the State of Israel. Mamdani is one of the best-known antisemites in the country.”
As of Monday evening, Mamdani’s team had not issued a response to Giuliani’s remarks.
The escalating war of words underscores the cultural and political crossroads facing New York — where the election of a young socialist Muslim mayor has become both a symbol of progress and a flashpoint of resistance.
