Man gropes Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum during a public walk near the presidential palace in Mexico City. The shocking incident happened when a man came from behind, touched her inappropriately, and tried to kiss her. Security officers quickly pulled him away.
Following the attack, man gropes Mexican president became a trending topic, sparking outrage across the country. Ms. Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, said she decided to file a police complaint after learning the same man had harassed other women. She said her decision was meant to protect all Mexican women.
“If they do this to the president, what will happen to other women?” she asked during her press conference. The man was later arrested, and an investigation is now underway.
Ms. Sheinbaum announced that the government will review the criminal codes of all 32 federal districts to ensure sexual harassment is treated as a criminal offence nationwide. She also said the government would launch a national awareness campaign to stop such behaviour.
Despite the harassment, she treated the man calmly and even took a picture with him before realising the seriousness of what happened through social media videos.
The incident sparked strong criticism of the presidential security team and highlighted ongoing issues of sexual harassment in Mexico. According to UN Women, about 70% of Mexican women aged 15 and older experience at least one incident of sexual harassment in their lifetime.
