Islamabad: In a worrying development for press freedom in Pakistan, senior journalist and analyst Imtiaz Gul has reportedly been barred from appearing on television channels nationwide. According to reliable sources, media owners and production teams have received directives prohibiting Gul’s participation in broadcast programs.
Silencing a Critical Voice
Imtiaz Gul, known for his sharp political analysis, suggested that the ban stems from dissatisfaction with his recent on-air remarks by powerful state institutions. In a YouTube video, he expressed his frustration, stating, “I was banned simply because I speak uncomfortable truths.”
He further criticized the government for distorting facts and misrepresenting information to target the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Gul warned that suppressing dissenting voices would further damage Pakistan’s credibility on the global stage.

“For the sake of our nation’s future, do not silence those who speak the truth,” he urged. “People who genuinely care about Pakistan should not be labeled as terrorists or enemies of the state. The focus should be on addressing real threats.”
Expanding Crackdown on Journalists
Gul’s ban follows a broader crackdown on media personalities in Pakistan. Several prominent journalists have faced similar restrictions in recent weeks, including:
Kashif Abbasi (ARY News)
Paras Jahanzaib & Habib Akram (Suno TV)
Khalid Jameel (ABN News)
These actions have raised serious concerns about media independence, with many journalists alleging state-backed censorship.
Beyond Journalists: Political Commentators Also Targeted
The crackdown has extended beyond journalists to include political commentators. Reports suggest that:
Prominent lawyer Latif Khosa
PML-N politician Javed Latif
PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari
have also been banned from appearing on TV channels.
This growing list of silenced voices has fueled fears of shrinking democratic space and a restricted media environment in Pakistan.
Freedom of Speech Under Threat
Pakistan has faced increasing scrutiny over press restrictions, particularly under laws like the PECA Act, which many view as a tool to suppress independent journalism. Media watchdogs have long warned about the deteriorating state of free expression, with the current wave of bans signaling a deeper clampdown on dissenting voices.
As censorship tightens, concerns grow over Pakistan’s democratic future, with experts warning that restricting journalists and commentators will only further erode public trust in the media and state institutions.
