Defending champions Argentina came from behind to beat England 2-1 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup semifinal, setting up a final against Spain.
England looked in control for much of the match after taking the lead and keeping Argentina quiet. The Three Lions enjoyed more possession, but Argentina stayed in the contest and never stopped pushing for a way back.
Lionel Messi once again reminded the world why he is one of football’s greatest players. Although England limited his influence for long periods, the Argentine captain produced two moments of brilliance when it mattered most. He set up Enzo Fernandez for the equalizer before delivering a perfect cross for substitute Lautaro Martinez, who headed home the winning goal in stoppage time. At 39, Messi continues to decide the biggest matches and has now guided Argentina to another World Cup final.
Argentina created the more dangerous chances throughout the game, finishing with 15 shots compared to England’s five. They forced Jordan Pickford into several important saves and also struck the woodwork twice. England struggled to break through Argentina’s well organized defense. Argentina enjoyed 64% possession.
The late comeback left England heartbroken. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who had inspired England’s run to the semifinals, could not prevent another painful World Cup exit. The defeat also extended England’s long wait for another World Cup title.
Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final as they chase back to back World Cup titles. England will meet France in the third place playoff.
