Elon Musk is considering merging Tesla and SpaceX, potentially combining electric vehicles, rockets, artificial intelligence and robotics into a technology empire worth trillions of dollars.
WASHINGTON: Elon Musk is considering merging two of his biggest technology companies, Tesla and SpaceX, in a move that could reshape the electric vehicle, space exploration and artificial intelligence industries.
According to a BBC report, Musk confirmed on Tuesday that he sees potential benefits in combining the two companies. He said special committees had been established to assess a possible merger, although no final decision has been made and the deal is not guaranteed.
Tesla is valued at approximately $1.5 trillion, while SpaceX has a reported valuation of $2 trillion. If completed, their combination would represent one of the largest corporate mergers in history.
Musk said the companies could gain significantly from working together, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), advanced chips and emerging technologies.
The merger could bring Tesla’s electric vehicles, humanoid robots and self-driving systems under the same corporate structure as SpaceX’s rockets, satellites, telecommunications operations and data centres.
Industry analysts believe the move could strengthen Musk’s long-term ambitions by combining resources and technological capabilities across his businesses.
David Nicholson, chief technology adviser at market research firm The Futurum Group, described a merger as highly likely, although its timing remains uncertain. He also pointed to Tesla’s recently unveiled Roadster, featuring SpaceX-inspired rocket thrusters, as a symbolic indication of the technological links between the companies.
The potential deal could also support Musk’s broader ambition of establishing a self-sustaining city on Mars, a vision that would require substantial advances in transportation, communications, robotics and computing.
However, significant obstacles remain. The merger would require shareholder approval, with at least half of Tesla’s shareholders needing to support the proposal, according to the report. Musk himself acknowledged that reaching this threshold could be difficult.
Financial analysts have also raised concerns about how the combined company would be valued and what the deal would mean for existing Tesla investors. Shareholders could own a smaller percentage of a much larger business, potentially changing their exposure to different industries and financial risks.
Following news of the potential merger, SpaceX shares rose 8% in after-hours trading, while Tesla shares gained 2%.
For customers, experts do not expect immediate, significant changes to Tesla vehicles if the merger proceeds. Instead, the biggest impact could emerge from closer integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, satellite communications and other advanced technologies.
Tesla has already expanded its focus on humanoid robots, with a manufacturing facility in California being used to produce its Optimus robots.
Despite growing speculation, the proposed merger remains under consideration, and its final structure, timing and implications for investors have yet to be determined.
