A prominent Pakistani journalist and anchor recently expressed his viewpoint on the ongoing Supreme Court proceedings, during which Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, made comments regarding media coverage. Here are the details:

Why does everyone with power in Pakistan want to play God? CJ Isa threatened punitive action against the media if it ‘dared’ to even suggest the possibility of elections not being held on Fed 8th, for whatever legitimate reasons. discussing any evolving political scenario doesn’t necessarily translate into the notion of misleading anyone. we respect you my lordship but kindly do not lord over the media’s right of free speech. it’s our responsibility to discuss matters responsibly and also yours to encourage free speech instead of placing arbitrary restrictions. meanwhile thank you for making pres & CEC sit together and hammer out an election date but having said that let’s not play God, sire!

In reply to the Mohammad Malick’s Tweet, Nilofer Afridi Qazi said:

Actually, he is correct. Unnecessarily promoting misinformation and speculation has been a large part of public discourse. An election date has been set. Thats it. Don’t provide space for illegal alternatives in a fragile democratic landscape. Media is to provide factual info

In counter-reply Mohamad Malick said:

You are missing the point. penalize someone for doing something illegal or detrimental to the common good but not for thinking differently. creeping annexation of free expression must be rejected, no matter how noble the professed intention. i have no doubt that elections will be held on Feb 8th but that is not the issue here. what’s worrying is the thought that the land’s highest court feels it can tell us what to think or say, rather than what not to think or say
