Why are petrol pump owners across Pakistan threatening to shut down operations? The answer lies in mounting frustration over unresolved pricing structures, policy uncertainties, and what industry leaders describe as continued government inaction.
The All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association has issued a stark warning of a nationwide shutdown, cautioning that up to 14,000–15,000 fuel stations could close if their concerns remain unaddressed.
In a strongly worded letter dated March 25, 2026, sent to Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, the association expressed disappointment at the lack of response to its March 6 communication.
“Unfortunately, we were not heard,” the association said, highlighting growing anger within the sector.
Petrol pump operators say they are struggling with multiple challenges, including flawed pricing mechanisms, operational constraints, and abrupt policy changes introduced under force majeure conditions. They argue that these issues are making it increasingly difficult to sustain their businesses.
The association has demanded urgent consultations with the government, emphasizing that stakeholders must be included in key decisions affecting the petroleum sector.
“We strongly suggest that the industry stakeholders be taken on board,” the letter stated.
Warning of serious consequences, the body said a shutdown could trigger a fresh fuel crisis across the country, disrupting transport, businesses, and daily life.
“In case we are unheard, then we would be compelled to shut down the business,” the association cautioned, adding that responsibility for any resulting crisis would rest with the petroleum ministry.
So far, the government has not issued an official response, leaving uncertainty hanging over Pakistan’s fuel supply chain as tensions escalate between authorities and petrol pump owners.
