June 13, 2025: The sole survivor of Air India flight AI 171, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, described his dramatic escape from the wreckage in a phone call to his family moments after the tragedy struck.
Vishwash, a British national, was sitting in Air India’s seat 11A when the plane went down near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. He was one of 242 people on board, including 53 British nationals. Air India has confirmed 241 deaths in the incident.
Vishwash was in India for a short visit to see his relatives and was boarding the Air India flight back to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, 45. His family, speaking to journalists, said Vishwash called immediately after the crash and said: “I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive — how I exited the plane.”
Nayan, a family member, explained: “He video called my dad and said, ‘The plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is.’ It was a shock for all of us.”
Vishwash is currently in the hospital under observation. His relatives are praying for his recovery and for the soul of his missing brother and all those who perished in the incident.
Nayan added he was supposed to pick his brother up from Gatwick Airport when the plane landed on Thursday evening, ahead of a family gathering this weekend.
