Mexico will host Iran’s national football team during the upcoming FIFA World Cup after the United States reportedly refused to host the squad, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said.
According to Reuters, Sheinbaum confirmed that her government had agreed to allow the Iranian team to stay in Mexico for the duration of the tournament.
The president’s remarks came after the head of Iran’s football federation announced on Saturday that the team’s World Cup base would be established in the Mexican border city of Tijuana.
The decision adds a political dimension to preparations for the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Neither US officials nor FIFA immediately commented publicly on the reported refusal to host the Iranian squad.
Relations between Washington and Tehran have remained tense for decades, with disputes over sanctions, regional security, and diplomatic relations continuing to affect bilateral ties.
Despite the controversy, Mexican authorities said preparations are underway to welcome the Iranian team and provide the necessary facilities during the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup is expected to attract millions of fans across North America, making it one of the largest sporting events in the region’s history.
