The United States has once again launched an attack on Iran, with the American newspaper *The Wall Street Journal* reporting that US forces targeted Iran’s strategically important Qeshm Island.
According to the newspaper, US officials confirmed that Washington had carried out the attack on Qeshm Island. The operation is reportedly the latest in a series of limited and undeclared US strikes against Iran in recent weeks.
US officials further stated that the attacks were defensive in nature. They said the objective of these operations was to prevent Iran from carrying out attacks on commercial and other vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway.
Earlier, Iranian media reported several powerful explosions on Qeshm Island and in areas surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. According to the reports, five consecutive loud explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, creating panic among local residents.
The intensity of the explosions reportedly caused the doors and walls of nearby buildings to shake. Local residents also claimed that unidentified military aircraft were flying through the airspace over the area.
Following the explosions, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its forces had disabled and seized two American MQM-170 surveillance drones south of Qeshm Island using advanced electronic warfare systems.
The IRGC further claimed that its forces had shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz.
The reported US attack, explosions and Iranian claims of targeting American drones come amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
