Fresh uncertainty has gripped efforts to revive U.S.-Iran diplomacy after Washington and Tehran issued sharply conflicting statements on the status of nuclear negotiations, while a reported attack on a commercial vessel near the Strait of Hormuz renewed concerns over the security of one of the world’s most vital energy routes.

The mixed diplomatic signals and the latest maritime incident have raised fresh questions about whether the two longtime rivals are moving closer to dialogue or drifting toward another dangerous escalation.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump insisted negotiations with Iran were already underway. He described the current moment as Tehran’s “last chance” to reach an agreement and said discussions were taking place at Iran’s request with the support of regional mediators, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“They are going on right now,” Trump told reporters, adding that Iran had one final opportunity to sign what he called “a good document.”

However, Tehran quickly rejected Trump’s claims. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said no talks with Washington were currently taking place and that no meetings had been scheduled. He also dismissed reports of Iranian officials preparing to travel abroad for negotiations.

According to Baghaei, Iran’s only ongoing discussions are with Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz, not over its nuclear programme or broader relations with the United States.

The contradictory statements come just days after Trump revealed he had cancelled what he described as “massive attacks” against Iran in anticipation of possible diplomatic progress. The announcement marked another dramatic shift in U.S. policy, following a pattern in which military threats have repeatedly been followed by renewed calls for negotiations.

Adding to the uncertainty, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman, was struck by an unidentified projectile. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally pass. Shipping activity has already slowed significantly, with vessel tracking data showing only six ships transited the strait on Monday.

Despite the security concerns, financial markets initially welcomed hopes that diplomacy could still prevail. Brent crude oil prices dropped around 7% to approximately $83.77 per barrel on Monday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high. Asian markets later traded cautiously higher as investors assessed the conflicting messages from Washington and Tehran.

Regional security experts believe Iran may be seeking to increase economic pressure on the United States by targeting trade routes, shipping lanes and energy infrastructure rather than engaging in direct military confrontation.

Michael Knights, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute, said Tehran understands it can inflict significant economic pain by disrupting regional commerce and global energy supplies, potentially increasing pressure on Washington to make concessions.

Later on Monday, Trump renewed his criticism of Iran on Truth Social, accusing its leadership of acting “unbelievably duplicitous.” He maintained that additional talks were expected soon and insisted the U.S. Navy retained full control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest developments underscore the fragile state of U.S.-Iran relations, with diplomacy hanging in the balance as security risks continue to threaten one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
