Two flying cars crashed into each other during a rehearsal for an upcoming airshow in northeastern China on Tuesday. The accident left one pilot slightly injured and caused one of the vehicles to catch fire after hitting the ground.
Videos shared online and by state media showed thick smoke rising as emergency teams rushed to the scene with fire trucks and ambulances.
The crash happened in Changchun, Jilin Province, while the city was preparing for a five-day airshow starting Friday. Both vehicles were electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) cars made by Xpeng Aeroht, a subsidiary of Chinese EV giant Xpeng.
Xpeng said the crash was caused by “insufficient spacing” between the two vehicles during their stunt performance. One car was badly damaged and caught fire upon landing, but the company confirmed that everyone on site was safe and authorities quickly handled the emergency.
An employee told CNN that the pilots were attempting high-difficulty stunts in close formation when the accident occurred. Only one pilot had minor injuries.
Flying cars like these are part of China’s big plans to grow its “low-altitude economy,” which includes flying taxis, drone deliveries, and other services in airspace below 3,000 meters. Experts say this industry could be worth more than $200 billion by 2025, and nearly $500 billion by 2035.
Xpeng Aeroht, which calls itself Asia’s largest flying car company, is among the leaders in this race. At the same time, many Chinese cities are already testing unmanned drone deliveries for food, parcels, and even medical supplies.
