Paramount Pictures has confirmed that a third installment in the blockbuster Top Gun franchise is officially in development, with a script currently underway.
Studio heads Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein said the project will reunite Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously collaborated on both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick.
However, Paramount did not confirm whether Cruise will reprise his iconic role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell or participate strictly as a producer, leaving fans speculating about his on-screen return.
The announcement came shortly after Paramount unveiled a star-studded promotional video celebrating the studio’s legacy, narrated by Cruise. The video takes viewers through the historic Hollywood backlot and ends with Cruise perched atop the studio’s iconic water tower.
“Like all great journeys, this one started with a dream,” Cruise says in the clip, reflecting on Paramount’s long-standing influence in global filmmaking.
The actor’s involvement in the ambitious promo — including physically appearing atop the landmark — underscores his continued reputation for performing daring stunts, both on and off screen. Cruise has previously scaled notable locations, including the Hollywood sign and the Burj Khalifa, for film promotions and action sequences.
The promotional video also featured appearances by several major Hollywood figures, including Timothée Chalamet, Will Smith, Chris Pratt, and Margaret Qualley.
The original Top Gun debuted in 1986, becoming a cultural phenomenon, while its long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick (2022) was a global box-office success and revitalized the franchise for a new generation.
With development now underway, Top Gun 3 marks another major step for Paramount as it leans into proven blockbuster properties, though key details — including casting, storyline, and release timeline — remain under wraps.
