A sessions court in Gujarat, India, has sentenced three Muslim men to life imprisonment for allegedly slaughtering a cow, imposing a fine of Rs 200,000 on each of them.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Additional Sessions Judge B.R. Rajput handed down the sentences to Ahmedabad residents Wasim Qureshi, Muhammad Rafiq Qureshi and Ashfaq.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 on each convict.
Police had claimed that 277 kilograms of beef were recovered from a house during a raid in Jamla village on August 22, 2024. The raid was conducted following allegations of cow slaughter.
Analysts say the verdict reflects the growing influence of Hindutva ideology within India’s judicial system. They argue that Muslims are being disproportionately targeted under cow protection laws, with severe punishments, including life imprisonment, being handed down on the basis of allegations.
The case has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding the treatment of Muslims under India’s cow protection laws and the severity of punishments imposed in such cases.
