The fate of Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran’s powerful Quds Force, has become the subject of intense speculation as the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel continues to escalate.
Unverified reports circulating widely on social media claim that Qaani may have been detained — or even executed — by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on suspicion of spying for Israel.
Iranian authorities have not confirmed any of the claims, and no official statement has been issued regarding his current whereabouts.
Online rumors fuel speculation
Several social media accounts have suggested that the IRGC arrested Qaani after internal suspicions emerged that he might have been acting as an informant for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad.
Some posts even alleged that the veteran commander was executed after surviving multiple assassination attempts.
However, none of these claims have been verified, and no credible evidence has surfaced to support the allegations.
Leadership after Soleimani’s death
Qaani, 67, became the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force in January 2020 after the United States killed his predecessor, Qassem Soleimani, in a drone strike near Baghdad airport.
The Quds Force oversees Iran’s regional network of allied militias often referred to as the “Axis of Resistance,” which includes groups across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza.
During Qaani’s tenure, the network has faced a series of heavy losses.
Senior figures such as Hassan Nasrallah and Ismail Haniyeh have been killed, while several Iranian commanders have died in recent targeted strikes.
Most recently, a joint U.S.-Israeli operation killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, dealing a major blow to Tehran’s leadership structure.
Suspicion amid a pattern of survival
Despite the wave of targeted killings across Iran’s leadership and allied groups, Qaani has repeatedly escaped death.
Over the past two years, reports have suggested that he was close to locations where Israeli or U.S. strikes later killed senior Iranian figures.
During the 2025 Iran-Israel confrontation, several media outlets even reported that Qaani had been killed, only for him to reappear publicly in Tehran weeks later.
A similar episode occurred in 2024 when rumors of his death circulated before he later appeared on Iranian state television.
Possible intelligence breach probe
Following a string of intelligence failures that allowed Israel to assassinate key figures within allied organizations such as Hezbollah, Iranian authorities reportedly launched internal investigations into potential security leaks.
Regional sources claim that Qaani and members of his inner circle were questioned as part of that probe, though Tehran has never publicly confirmed such inquiries.
Adding to the intrigue, Israeli officials previously released a list of Iranian-linked figures targeted for elimination — but Qaani’s name was reportedly absent.
Mystery surrounding his whereabouts
As the regional conflict intensifies, Qaani’s absence from the public spotlight has fueled speculation about his role and status within Iran’s military command.
Whether the seasoned commander remains active, under investigation, or simply stays out of view for security reasons remains unclear.
For now, the uncertainty surrounding one of Iran’s most secretive military figures continues to deepen the mystery around the leadership of the Quds Force.
