Speaking at a press conference for his latest film, “Bitter Christmas,” during the Cannes Film Festival, Pedro Almodóvar strongly condemned the political leadership of the United States, Israel, and Russia.
“As Europeans, we are obliged to become a kind of shield against these monsters like Trump, Netanyahu, or the Russians,” Almodóvar said while discussing growing political tensions and global instability.
The filmmaker appeared at the event wearing a “Free Palestine” pin, continuing his outspoken criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and expressing solidarity with Palestinians.
Almodóvar is internationally known for award-winning films, including Talk to Her and Volver, and has frequently used public appearances to address humanitarian and political issues.
His remarks followed similar criticism earlier at Cannes by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who also condemned Trump, Netanyahu, and Putin while warning about what he described as rising “toxic masculinity” among global leaders.
Almodóvar’s latest film, “Bitter Christmas,” reportedly explores themes of emotional struggle and artistic exhaustion through the story of a filmmaker searching for inspiration.
Several films featured at Cannes 2026 have focused on war, displacement, political division, and humanitarian crises, reflecting growing concerns within the global film industry over ongoing international conflicts.
The comments quickly sparked strong reactions online, with supporters praising the director’s bold political stance while critics accused him of politicizing the film festival stage.
