After more than three months in custody, Sohrab Barkatt has been granted bail in all four NCCIA cybercrime cases, Barrister Saad Rasool announced on X, after the Islamabad High Court overturned a bail cancellation order, clearing the way for his release.
In a key ruling on Monday, the Islamabad High Court set aside an earlier order by Judge Majhoka that had cancelled Barkatt’s bail in FIR No. 330/2025. With that decision overturned, Barkatt now stands granted bail in each of the four FIRs filed against him by the NCCIA.
Supporters described the decision as a moment of relief after what they termed a prolonged and difficult legal battle. “We bow before the Almighty in gratitude and look forward to Sohrab’s return to his family and friends, Insha Allah,” a statement said following the court’s order.
What was his alleged crime?
According to legal sources, the cases against Barkatt were registered by the NCCIA under cybercrime-related provisions. While official charge sheets have not been publicly detailed in full, the FIRs reportedly stemmed from allegations linked to online content and digital activity that authorities claimed violated cybercrime laws.
Barkatt’s legal team had argued that the charges were exaggerated and that bail cancellation in one of the FIRs was unjustified. Monday’s ruling effectively restores his bail status across all four cases, though the trials themselves remain pending.
Legal battle continues
The Islamabad High Court’s decision does not amount to an acquittal. Bail allows the accused to remain out of custody while proceedings continue. Legal experts note that the prosecution will still have to prove its case in court.
The NCCIA has yet to issue a detailed public statement following the latest ruling.
For now, however, the decision marks a major turning point for Barkatt and his family after months of uncertainty, with his supporters calling it a vindication of due process and judicial oversight.
