Saudi Arabia marks its 96th National Day on September 22 with celebrations across the Kingdom from Jeddah to Riyadh as millions of citizens and expatriates join in national pride and tradition.
From the streets of Jeddah draped in green to family gatherings in Riyadh and cultural celebrations in Jazan, Saudi Arabia has marked its 96th National Day with the warmth, pride and tradition that define this remarkable Kingdom and its people.
Millions of Saudi citizens and expatriates from across the world joined the celebrations — on roads flying the Saudi flag, in homes serving traditional meals, and in communities where stories of the Kingdom’s transformation are passed between generations with pride and gratitude.

A Nation Transformed in One Generation
The voices of Saudi citizens captured by Arab News this week tell the story of a Kingdom whose transformation has been extraordinary by any measure.
Mohannad Garoud, a 28-year-old marine engineer in Jeddah, described what National Day means on the streets. “My favourite scene is when my car is stuck on King Abdulaziz Road. People leave their homes to enjoy the celebrations and see how others have decorated their cars. Everyone celebrates in their own way.”
In Jazan, Nahla Zamim, a mother of four, spoke about her region’s distinctive cultural heritage. “The streets and waterfronts are transformed by the colour green,” she said.
Abdullah Al-Othaim, a student in Riyadh, offered perhaps the most profound observation. “What stands out to me is how much the Kingdom has changed within a single generation. The younger ones have only ever known the Saudi Arabia we have today, so they have no picture of what came before.”
That sentence captures the essence of Vision 2030 in human terms. A generation of Saudis is growing up in a country their parents could not have fully imagined.
Tradition, Food and Community
Saudi National Day is not only a political or civic occasion. It is a deeply personal one — celebrated through food, family, music and the particular pride that comes from belonging to something larger than oneself.
Lama Alidrissy, a culinary arts student in Alkhobar, is marking the occasion through her craft. “I’m developing an elevated Saudi dessert inspired by Hijazi flavours, bringing traditional flavours into a contemporary form as part of my studies.”
Earlier in the week 6,000 Saudis and expatriates from different nationalities participated in the Saudi National Day Run in Historic Jeddah — combining fitness, community and a shared celebration of their home in one of the most inclusive national day traditions in the Gulf.
