Samsung made a remarkable debut at the annual Display Week trade show in Los Angeles, where it unveiled an impressive 12.4-inch rollable OLED panel. While rollable displays are not entirely new, Samsung’s creation stands out as the largest of its kind and can roll into a compact scroll.
The panel boasts an impressive 5x scalability, ranging from 49 mm to 254.4 mm, surpassing the capabilities of current sliding screens that can only achieve up to 3x expansion. Samsung Display achieved this milestone by utilizing an O-shaped axis that mimics the mechanics of a scroll. Known as Rollable Flex, this panel offers a completely rollable and versatile display solution.
In addition to the Rollable Flex, Samsung introduced the Flex In & Out OLED panel, which has the unique ability to bend in both directions. This sets it apart from existing technologies, such as those seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Flip 4 and Fold 4, where flexible OLEDs can only fold in one direction.
Moreover, Samsung unveiled the world’s first OLED panel with an integrated fingerprint reader and heart rate sensor. Unlike current implementations that rely on a limited sensor area, Samsung’s solution enables users to unlock their devices with a touch of their finger anywhere on the screen. This groundbreaking technology incorporates the organic photodiode (OPD) directly into the panel itself, responsible for light sensing. Additionally, the panel can monitor blood vessel contractions and relaxations, allowing it to measure blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels.
