Pakistan says it remains committed to diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, calling the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding the most viable path toward lasting regional peace.
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan said Wednesday it would continue efforts to promote dialogue between the United States and Iran despite a fresh escalation in their months-long conflict, as renewed attacks raised fears of wider instability across the Middle East.
“Despite recent escalations, we remain hopeful and continue to strive for dialogue and diplomacy,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told reporters in Islamabad.
His comments came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it carried out simultaneous attacks on US military bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq in retaliation for a reported US strike on a house in Sirik in southern Iran a day earlier.
Iran said the US strike killed four people, including a child. Washington has disputed accusations that its military deliberately targets civilians.
The latest confrontation marked another sharp escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran, which began on Feb. 28 and has since spread across the Gulf region, disrupting security around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC also claimed that US personnel were killed and drones destroyed during an attack on Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. The claims could not be independently verified immediately.
Pakistan has positioned itself as a key diplomatic intermediary between Iran and the United States throughout the conflict, maintaining contact with both sides while calling for a negotiated settlement.
Andrabi pointed to recent diplomatic engagement, including visits to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, as well as visits involving the foreign ministers of Qatar and Oman.
He said the diplomatic contacts formed part of broader efforts to facilitate an end to the conflict, with particular attention being given to renewed attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, and continued disruptions have raised concerns about regional security and global oil supplies.
Pakistan believes an understanding reached between Washington and Tehran under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding offers the strongest foundation for restoring stability, Andrabi said.
“We underscored that the understanding reached between the US and Iran under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding offers the most viable pathway toward lasting peace and stability in the region,” he added.
Islamabad’s latest appeal reflects growing concern that continued military exchanges could further widen the conflict and draw more countries into the confrontation.
Pakistan has repeatedly called on both sides to prioritize diplomacy, arguing that sustained engagement remains essential to preventing further escalation and restoring peace across an increasingly volatile region.
