Pakistan Stops Issuing Machine-Readable Passports: Here Is What Every Traveller Needs to Know

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has discontinued new applications and renewals for machine-readable passports (MRPs), making electronic passports (e-passports) the standard for all new applications from October 15, 2026.

However, existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until their expiry dates, meaning holders do not need to replace them immediately simply because the new policy has taken effect.

According to Pakistani media, October 14 was the final day to submit applications for machine-readable passports. Under the new policy, all fresh applications and renewals will be processed through the e-passport system.

Policy applies in Pakistan and overseas

The change applies to passport offices across Pakistan and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad, including those in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.

Pakistanis living overseas will therefore also need to apply for e-passports when seeking new travel documents or renewing their existing passports.

Applicants should check the requirements of their relevant passport office or Pakistani diplomatic mission before submitting an application.

What happens to existing passports?

The most important clarification for passport holders is that previously issued machine-readable passports have not automatically become invalid.

Those holding an MRP can continue using it until its stated expiry date, subject to the usual entry, visa and travel requirements of their destination countries.

There is no immediate requirement to replace an existing passport solely because Pakistan has switched to the e-passport system.

Travelers with upcoming international trips should nevertheless ensure their passports meet their destination country’s validity requirements.

What makes an e-passport different?

An electronic passport contains an embedded electronic chip that stores the holder’s personal information and biometric details, along with other identifying data and a digital signature.

The technology is designed to strengthen document security, reduce forgery risk, and align passport issuance with international standards.

According to Pakistan’s Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, e-passports follow standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The electronic chip may also support automated immigration processing at compatible border-control facilities, potentially making identity verification more efficient.

What applicants should know

The transition means anyone applying for a new Pakistani passport or renewing an existing one must now follow the e-passport process.

Existing MRP holders, however, can continue using their documents until expiry, provided they satisfy all applicable travel and immigration requirements.

The move marks another step in Pakistan’s transition towards more secure, technology-enabled travel documents.
