Heavy monsoon rains continue to batter Pakistan, pushing the death toll to 122 and injuring 388 people, while authorities remain on high alert amid warnings of more rain and rising river levels.

Monsoon Rains Continue to Claim Lives
Pakistan’s ongoing monsoon season has turned increasingly deadly, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirming that at least 122 people have lost their lives since June 26 due to rain-related incidents. Another 388 people have been injured, as heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of the country.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the current spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5, increasing the risk of flooding, landslides, and urban emergencies in vulnerable areas.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Reports Highest Casualties
Official figures show that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 56 deaths, followed by Punjab with 46. Azad Kashmir reported 10 deaths, Balochistan recorded eight, Sindh reported two, while Gilgit-Baltistan confirmed one fatality.
In response to the worsening situation, the federal government has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre in Islamabad on the directives of the Prime Minister. The Emergency Response Committee is monitoring developments around the clock and coordinating relief efforts with provincial authorities.
Authorities Warn of Rising Water Levels
The NDMA has warned that water levels in Pakistan’s major rivers could continue to rise if rainfall persists. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department says that water levels in both Tarbela and Mangla dams are steadily increasing, raising concerns about possible flooding in downstream areas.
Citizens living in low-lying and flood-prone regions have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow official safety instructions issued by local authorities.
Climate Change Increasing Pakistan’s Weather Risks
Experts say Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with increasingly frequent heatwaves, droughts, and extreme monsoon events.
The country has already experienced devastating floods in recent years. In 2025, severe monsoon rains and flooding claimed over 1,000 lives, while the catastrophic 2022 floods killed more than 1,700 people, affected over 33 million residents, and caused an estimated 30 billion US dollars in economic losses.
With more rainfall forecast in the coming days, authorities continue to urge the public to take precautionary measures as emergency teams remain on standby across the country.
