KARACHI: In a significant decision highlighting the growing concerns over media workers’ rights in Pakistan, a local court in Karachi has ordered Air Waves Media Group (Private) Limited — the parent company of News One — to pay more than Rs2.18 million in outstanding dues to senior journalist and cameraman Zulfiqar Ali Babar within one month.
The ruling was issued by the Workers Compensation Authority and the Court of Commissioner for Workers Compensation and Authority under the Payment of Wages Act (Central Division), Karachi. The court declared the order immediately enforceable.
According to court records, the petitioner submitted documentary evidence and an affidavit in support of his claims, while the respondent company failed to present an effective legal defense.
Zulfiqar Ali Babar had served for several years as a senior cameraman at News One, a subsidiary of Air Waves Media Group. He stated that he was removed from his job without valid legal justification, prompting him to seek legal remedy for unpaid dues and employment rights.
The court directed the media company to clear payments amounting to Rs2,185,760 within 30 days.
The verdict has reignited debate within journalistic circles regarding the treatment of media employees, including reporters, cameramen, producers and newsroom staff, many of whom have repeatedly raised concerns over delayed salaries, unpaid benefits and abrupt terminations in media organizations across the country.
Legal experts say Pakistan’s labor laws guarantee protection of employees’ wages and basic workplace rights, while constitutional safeguards and international labor principles also emphasize fair treatment and financial security for workers.
The decision is being viewed as an important legal development for media workers’ rights, with many now watching closely to see how and when News One and its parent company comply with the court’s order.
