According to Mumbai Police, a Pakistani man allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life in a suspected murder-suicide case in the Indian city of Mumbai.
The incident occurred on Monday (June 9) in the Kharghar area of Mumbai, where 45-year-old Pakistani national Notan Das, also known as Sanjay Sachdev, allegedly stabbed his 35-year-old wife Sapna Notan Das to death following a domestic dispute. He then reportedly used the same knife to take his own life.
Mumbai Police have registered a case under sections about murder and suicide.
The couple hailed from Sukkur, Sindh in Pakistan. They had migrated to India in November 2024 and were residing in a rented apartment in Kharghar. According to police, the couple was living in India on a Long-Term Visa (LTV). They had two children who were enrolled in a local school.
It’s worth noting that the Indian government grants long-term visit visas to Pakistani Hindu citizens wishing to relocate to India. These visas eventually allow eligibility for Indian citizenship and related facilities.
Following the Pahalgam attack earlier this year in April, the Indian government had ordered all Pakistani nationals in India to leave. However, this directive did not apply to Pakistani Hindus residing in India on long-term visas.
Those holding such visas are typically individuals seeking permanent residency in India from Pakistan.
According to Mumbai Police, the incident took place between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM on Monday.
The tragedy came to light when Notan Das’s son returned home from tuition and found the door locked. After repeated doorbell rings went unanswered, concerned neighbors contacted Sapna’s sister, Sangeeta Makhija, who also resides in Mumbai.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Mohite stated that Sangeeta called Sapna but received no response. She then rushed to their home, where she discovered both Sapna and Sanjay lying in pools of blood.
Sapna was declared dead before arriving at the hospital, while Sanjay succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
According to DCP Mohite, “Preliminary investigations suggest that a domestic argument led to the tragedy. Sanjay attacked his wife with a sharp kitchen knife, inflicting multiple wounds on her neck, shoulders, and back, resulting in her instant death. He then turned the knife on himself, causing fatal injuries.”
