Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir could enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction as a British citizen, according to reports cited by The Current. The auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
Amir, who currently lives in England and has acquired British citizenship, recently registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a UK national. The development has renewed speculation that he may also register for the IPL auction, although his participation has not been officially confirmed.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, Amir has been listed as a UK national for the APL draft, with Pakistan mentioned as his country of residence. He has been placed in the Platinum category. The report says he is widely expected to register for the IPL auction from England as well.
Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the tournament’s inaugural season in 2008, amid strained relations between Pakistan and India. Reports suggest that Amir’s British citizenship may allow him to register as an overseas player and could mean that he does not require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, the final eligibility requirements and any necessary clearances will depend on the relevant tournament rules.
There is a previous example of a Pakistan-born cricketer playing in the IPL after acquiring British citizenship. Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood represented Kings XI Punjab in 2012 and 2013, and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015. His participation is often cited as a precedent for Amir’s possible entry.
Amir has previously spoken about the possibility of playing in the IPL. In an interview reported by India Today in August 2026, he said he had not yet decided whether he would participate. He also confirmed that he planned to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as an overseas player from the 2027 season.
The IPL 2027 auction will take place in Goa on December 16, according to the reports. Whether Amir formally submits his name, meets the league’s requirements and attracts interest from a franchise remains to be seen. No team has announced a signing, and his possible appearance should not be treated as confirmed.
