Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has carried out its third round of layoffs, affecting nearly 6,000 employees globally, including in India. Several top executives in India, such as Avinash Pant, Saket Jha Saurabh, and Amrita Mukherjee, were reportedly asked to step down. Mukherjee, who had been leading the legal team at Hotstar before joining Meta, was among those laid off.
The layoffs impacted various departments in India, including marketing, administration, and human resources. Surabhi Prakash, a Business Engineer at Meta, expressed her sentiments on LinkedIn after being let go, saying she was sad but relieved that the anxiousness was over. Employees across different levels within the company were affected by these job cuts.
These layoffs are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs, which they have dubbed the “Year of Efficiency.” Meta’s Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, had previously announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs through two rounds of layoffs. Since November 2022, a total of 21,000 positions have been eliminated across various departments, with 4,000 of the planned 10,000 job cuts implemented last month.
While these job cuts are intended to enhance efficiency and align with changing market dynamics, they pose challenges for the affected employees, including senior executives in India, who now face the consequences of the company’s cost-cutting measures
