Matt Henry experienced an extraordinary few days balancing fatherhood and international cricket, flying home for the birth of his son before returning to help New Zealand national cricket team reach the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The 34-year-old pace bowler delivered a key performance in New Zealand’s commanding nine-wicket victory over South Africa national cricket team in the first semi-final in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Henry finished with impressive figures of 2-34 after rejoining the squad only hours before the crucial match.
From family moment to global stage
Henry had flown back home after New Zealand’s Super Eight match against England national cricket team on February 27 to be present for the birth of his second child.
He and his wife Holly Carran welcomed a baby boy, adding to their growing family.
Less than 24 hours after landing back in India, Henry took the field in the World Cup semi-final.
“There was a lot of sleep happening on the way back to be honest,” Henry said with a smile while speaking to reporters after the match.
“Just focusing on my family to get home, that was important for me, and then it worked out that I could get back for the semi-final so it’s great to be here.”
Allen’s record ton powers New Zealand
New Zealand’s emphatic win was driven by a stunning batting display from opener Finn Allen, who smashed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history.
Allen reached the milestone in just 33 balls, dismantling South Africa’s bowling attack and sealing the chase with ease.
His explosive innings ensured New Zealand cruised into the tournament final.
Another shot at the title
The victory sends New Zealand into only their second T20 World Cup final.
The team previously reached the final in 2021 but lost to the Australia national cricket team in the title clash held in the United Arab Emirates.
New Zealand will now play the winner of the semi-final between the India national cricket team and the England national cricket team in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.
Henry said the team is thrilled with their progress but remains focused on the bigger challenge ahead.
“It’s pretty special to be able to reach another final,” he said. “The guys are really excited, but for now we’ll enjoy this win and then get ready for what’s coming next.”
