Maryam Nawaz’s Multan arrogance — when a Chief Minister forgets she works for the people

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz faced sharp criticism after her arrogant response in Multan to questions about using a government luxury jet for her personal London trip to attend her daughter’s graduation.

Every Pakistani who pays taxes has the right to ask one simple question.

When a Chief Minister uses a government luxury jet worth billions of rupees for a personal family event, pays back the cost only after weeks of sustained media pressure, and then responds to legitimate public questions with contempt rather than clarity — who exactly is she working for?

The answer that Maryam Nawaz provided in Multan this week was not an answer at all. It was a performance of arrogance that left Pakistan’s journalism community, political analysts and ordinary citizens more troubled than the original jet controversy itself.

What Happened in Multan

When confronted with questions about the government Gulfstream G500 jet used for her London trip to attend daughter Mahnoor Safdar’s graduation ceremony, Maryam Nawaz did not offer transparency. She did not offer accountability. She did not acknowledge the legitimate public interest in how a publicly-owned aircraft worth approximately Rs 10 billion is being used.

She offered dismissal. Deflection. And the kind of political arrogance that senior analysts have begun describing as a defining characteristic of her administration rather than an isolated incident.

Raza Rumi, one of Pakistan’s most respected senior political analysts, said on a television program that he was genuinely saddened by what he observed. Maryam Nawaz, he said, showed a complete absence of political maturity and siyasi baloogat — the political wisdom and measured temperament that distinguishes a statesperson from a politician who has simply inherited power.

His words carried weight precisely because they came from a place of disappointment rather than opposition partisanship.

The Questions She Has Not Answered

Mohammad Malick asked 17 specific questions. Mansoor Ali Khan raised pointed questions about the use of public resources. Kamran Khan pressed for accountability on the same issue. Three of Pakistan’s most experienced broadcast journalists separately and independently pursued the same accountability trail.

Maryam Nawaz’s response was not to answer those questions. Her response — and that of her information machinery — was to treat the questions themselves as an act of aggression rather than a legitimate exercise of press freedom.

This is the fundamental inversion that makes this controversy larger than the jet itself. The questions are being directed at CM Punjab — a constitutional office accountable to the people of Pakistan. They are not personal attacks on Maryam Nawaz the individual. A Chief Minister who cannot distinguish between scrutiny of her office and personal criticism of herself has a comprehension problem that goes beyond any single controversy.

The Arrogance That Has Become Institutional

What makes the Multan response particularly alarming is that this arrogance is no longer confined to one person. It has become the institutional posture of the Punjab government’s entire communications apparatus.

Marriyum Aurangzeb and Azma Bokhari have both adopted the same dismissive, contemptuous posture toward legitimate media questions. A pattern that began as one leader’s personality trait has calcified into an official communication style that treats accountability journalism as an enemy activity rather than a democratic function.

When a government’s default response to questions about public money is to reach for journalists’ collars rather than reach for the facts, something has gone profoundly wrong with its relationship to the people it governs.

The Questions That Go Beyond the Jet

The London jet controversy has raised questions that extend far beyond a single trip and a single aircraft.

Which aircraft did Mian Nawaz Sharif use to travel to Singapore? This is not a rhetorical question. It is a factual question about the use of public assets that deserves a direct answer.

Who else has used the Punjab government’s aircraft fleet, when, and for what purpose? Pakistan’s taxpayers paid for these aircraft. They are not the personal property of any political family or any Chief Minister. A full public accounting of every flight, every passenger, and every cost is not an unreasonable demand. It is the minimum standard of transparency that democratic governance requires.

The Payment That Raises More Questions

The reported payment of Rs 27.2 million to a National Bank of Pakistan account titled ZGBMRA via a Bank of Punjab cheque submitted by a third party named Umer Abbas raises its own questions. MediaBites reported the cheque number 2002498721 and the account details. No official confirmation has been provided by the Punjab government or NBP.

Why was the reimbursement made through an unexplained account title? Why through a Bank of Punjab account whose title was not disclosed? Why submitted by a third party rather than through official government documentation released publicly?

A payment made in the dark is not transparency. It is the appearance of transparency designed to close a controversy without actually answering the questions that created it.

This Is About Ethics, Not Just Explanations

The deepest issue in this entire controversy is not procedural. It is not about the correct reimbursement amount. It is not about whether the right cheque went to the right account.

It is about akhlaqiat — ethics. The moral framework that should govern how people in positions of public trust relate to the public resources they temporarily steward.

A government jet is not a perk of office. It is a public asset maintained with tax revenue collected from teachers, shopkeepers, farmers, factory workers, and millions of ordinary Pakistanis who will never travel in any aircraft, let alone a Gulfstream G500 worth billions of rupees. Using that asset for a personal family event — regardless of reimbursement — requires a standard of ethical sensitivity that, as the Multan press conference demonstrated, was entirely absent.

The journalists asking these questions are not the problem. They are performing the exact function that a free press exists to perform in a democracy.

The Chief Minister of Punjab reaching for journalists’ collars instead of for answers is not strength. It is the clearest possible admission that the answers are not ones she wants to give.

What Pakistan Deserves

Pakistan’s citizens deserve a Chief Minister who understands that swalaat — questions — from journalists are not attacks on her dignity. They are the mechanism through which 120 million people in Punjab exercise their democratic right to know how their government is using their money.

Maryam Nawaz has the political skills, communication skills, and public profile to be a genuinely transformative Chief Minister. She is squandering that potential every time she chooses arrogance over accountability and deflection over dignity.

Jawab dena hai. The answer must come. The jet belongs to Pakistan. Not to any family. Not to any party. And not to any Chief Minister who confuses public office with personal entitlement.
