A horrific domestic violence incident in Louisiana has left eight children dead, as family members reveal troubling warning signs that preceded one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent years.

In a tragedy that has shocked the United States, a 31-year-old man, identified as Shamar Elkins, shot and killed eight children — seven of them his own — in what authorities describe as a devastating case of domestic violence.
The early morning attack on Sunday is being called the deadliest mass shooting in the country in over two years.
A community in shock
The violence unfolded across multiple homes in Shreveport, leaving a community devastated and struggling to comprehend the scale of the loss.
“This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst we’ve ever had,” said Mayor Tom Arceneaux.
The victims ranged in age from just 3 to 11 years, with authorities confirming that most of the children were shot inside a residence.
Timeline of terror
Police said the first emergency call was received just before 6 a.m., with reports of gunfire inside a home. A second call revealed that multiple family members had been shot, while a third call linked the suspect to another shooting nearby.
According to investigators, Elkins fled the scene after carjacking a vehicle, leading police on a pursuit into a neighboring parish. He was later shot and killed by law enforcement.
Survivors and desperate escape
During the attack, several victims attempted to escape. A 12-year-old girl jumped from a rooftop and survived with minor injuries, while two adult women — including the suspect’s wife — were critically wounded.
Bullet marks found near the back of the home suggest some victims tried to flee as the shooting unfolded.
Warning signs before tragedy
Family members say there were clear warning signs leading up to the incident.
Elkins had reportedly struggled with mental health issues and had recently received treatment. He was also going through a divorce, with relatives describing him as emotionally distressed in the days before the attack.
Just days earlier, he had shared a social media post referencing a prayer asking for strength against depression, anger, and anxiety.
“He was having a hard time… everything felt like it was falling apart,” a relative said.
Domestic violence at the core
Authorities believe the attack was rooted in domestic violence, with investigators now examining whether it qualifies as a “family annihilation” case — a rare but extreme form of violence where an individual kills close family members.
Local officials say domestic violence remains a major issue in the region, accounting for a significant portion of homicides.
Grief and unanswered questions
As the investigation continues, the community has come together in mourning. Memorials of flowers, balloons, and candles have been placed outside the home, while support organizations have stepped in to assist the victims’ families.
“This is what happens when someone snaps,” said a city official, urging greater awareness and intervention around mental health and domestic abuse.
For many, the tragedy raises painful and unanswered questions — including one voiced by a neighbor who had seen the children playing just hours earlier:
“What kind of father could do this?”
The answer, for now, remains part of a tragedy that has left a city — and a nation — in grief.
