A 45-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband in Karachi’s Sultanabad area on Friday after she supported their daughter’s decision to marry of her own free will. Police arrested the suspect at the scene and recovered the weapon used in the killing.

Family Dispute Turns Fatal

The victim, identified as Zarmeen, was the mother of two daughters and one son. One of her daughters had recently entered a free-will marriage. Zarmeen supported the choice. Her husband, Shaukat Tanoli, strongly opposed it. The disagreement led to repeated arguments between the couple in the days leading up to the incident.

On Friday, another argument erupted. According to police, Shaukat drew a pistol and fired at his wife. Rescuers rushed Zarmeen to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Doctors there declared her dead on arrival.

Police Action and Investigation

Docks Station House Officer (SHO) Waqar Kaiser confirmed the sequence of events. Officers arrested Shaukat Tanoli at the scene. The murder weapon was recovered.

Zarmeen’s father is deceased. Her mother, who lives in Abbottabad, is travelling to Karachi to claim the body and register the First Information Report (FIR). Police are treating the case as a domestic murder linked to opposition to the daughter’s marriage.

 Pattern of Violence Over Free-Will Marriages

The Karachi killing follows a similar recent case in Rawalpindi’s Gujjar Khan area. There, police registered a murder case against a man accused of shooting his 17-year-old sister dead over her love marriage.

According to the girl’s father, she had left home in January on the day of her rukhsati to marry a man of her choice. The couple later moved to Karachi. Four days before the shooting, the brother travelled to Karachi, reconciled with his sister, and brought her back to Gujjar Khan, where he arranged a rented house for the couple.

On the day of the incident, the father visited the house and witnessed a commotion. He stated that his son drew a pistol and fired at the girl, killing her on the spot. Gujjar Khan police registered the case based on the father’s statement.

Social Context of Free-Will Marriages in Pakistan

Free-will or “love” marriages continue to generate intense family conflict in many parts of the country. While Pakistani law recognises the right of adult citizens to choose their spouse, social norms in some communities still place strong emphasis on parental or family approval, particularly from male relatives.
