Dubai: Vatsal Shah, 17, had struggled with obesity since childhood.
During his time in Grade 12 at Raffles World Academy in Dubai, this student encountered various health challenges, including hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, all diagnosed before the age of 10. Now, seven years later, Shah has successfully shed 70kg of weight, accomplishing this remarkable feat over a span of 18 months.
Prior to August 2020, when Shah was 13 years old, he carried a weight of 140kg and had a BMI of 47, categorizing him as obese. Presently, he has achieved a weight of 73kg, attaining an ideal BMI of 23, which falls within the normal range.
Shah has successfully overcome both diabetes and hypertension. Now, he has transitioned into a social media content creator, using Instagram to share his inspiring weight-loss journey.
“It all began with swimming since my stamina was too low for high-intensity cardio workouts, and running was out of the question. During school breaks, I dedicated time to swimming, initially finding it challenging but gradually improving,” Shah shared.
His weight-loss journey received essential support from his parents, who played a pivotal role in transforming their household habits.
“We eliminated all fatty and junk food from our home, cutting out chocolates, biscuits, and fast food,” Shah explained.
Shah’s mother also made changes to their meals, adopting a healthier approach.
“I reduced my meal portions from four plates to two, later further decreasing them. I substituted fatty snacks with nuts and protein chips, incorporating oats into my daily meals. Even though my parents were not obese, they joined me by forsaking fatty and unhealthy foods.”
Despite facing challenges, Shah remained determined.
“There were moments when my willpower wavered on the diet, but I quickly rebounded onto the journey. I faced numerous setbacks, but I lifted myself to return to the path of good health and well-being.”
As Shah shed weight, his self-esteem soared, leading to improved academic performance.
“In Grade 10, I excelled academically, and my confidence reached new heights. Losing weight positively impacted my academics,” he added.
Inspired by his transformation, Shah started sharing fitness videos on his Instagram account (@fitness_freak_), amassing over 15,000 followers and offering health and fitness advice. Encouraged by the positive response, he expanded his outreach.
“I launched a website featuring workout videos on dynamic stretching, cardio fitness, and weight training, aiming to guide others. Through collaborations with establishments in the UAE, I formed a community of over 15,000 individuals.”
Shah’s commitment extended to health advocacy, including a TEDx talk delivered at Raffles World Academy.
Book launch
His enthusiasm to share his weight-loss journey helped him write and publish a book, titled Rebirth of Strength.
A portion of the proceeds from the book’s sales contributes to the Access Life Foundation in India, supporting schoolchildren.
“I’ve partnered with local hospitals in India and Kenya to arrange mindfulness sessions for patients and facilitate connections with health experts,” he shared.
His impact has reached across various countries, encompassing India, Kenya, Singapore, Brazil, Bahrain, and the UK.
“I aspire for my efforts to raise awareness about global health and bring benefits to as many individuals as possible,” Shah expressed.
