At least 13 people, including Indian and Pakistani nationals, were killed in an explosion at a facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) hubs, according to QatarEnergy.
The company confirmed that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the blast, which occurred at a key energy facility in the strategic industrial zone.
QatarEnergy said preliminary information indicated that the victims included Indian and Pakistani workers. A total of 66 people were also injured in the incident, including nationals from Qatar, Tanzania, Guinea, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya and Nigeria.
Authorities said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
The explosion followed a separate incident late Sunday at a domestic gas supply facility in Barzan during restart operations. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, and officials later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control.
Despite the deadly incident, QatarEnergy stressed that the blast did not affect LNG exports or operations at Ras Laffan Port, seeking to reassure global energy markets about uninterrupted gas supplies.
QatarEnergy stated that all LNG production facilities and export infrastructure continued to operate normally following the explosion.
Ras Laffan Industrial City is considered the backbone of Qatar’s energy sector and plays a critical role in global LNG exports. Any disruption at the facility is closely monitored by international markets due to Qatar’s position as one of the world’s leading gas exporters.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of the explosion, while technical teams continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deadly blast.
