In Pakistan, each day brings a unique set of circumstances, some of which are laughable. Recently, we’ve witnessed remarkable events, such as a media tycoon being openly courted for the role of caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, and later appointed to the top cricketing post as Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board. Additionally, he was elected as a Senator as an independent candidate with the support of PPP and PML-N, while simultaneously serving as Interior Minister in PM Shehbaz Sharif’s government.
Currently, Pakistani cricket is experiencing a surge of activity, characterized by a frantic search for foreign coaches with discussions of lucrative annual salaries. However, it’s important to note that a significant portion of our national cricket team lacks proficiency in English, with 90% having only completed secondary education.
Meanwhile, noteworthy developments are unfolding in other countries. Sri Lanka has named former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed as their fast-bowling coach, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board has appointed leg-spin maestro Mushtaq Ahmed as their spin-bowling coach. This juxtaposition raises questions of contradiction, echoing the sentiments of Sohail Warraich, who asks, ‘Kya yeh khula tazad nahin?’
Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has acquired the services of former Pakistan leg-spinner and World Cup winner Mushtaq Ahmed as the new spin bowling coach. The BCB formally announced Mushtaq’s appointment on Tuesday. He will join the side ahead of the preparation camp later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe and will work with the Tigers until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.
