IK’s arrested nephew in Chitral is at the center of a major controversy after police detained Shahrez Khan, son of Aleema Khan and nephew of jailed former prime minister IK. Lahore police arrested him late Thursday night from his residence, alleging his involvement in the May 9, 2023 Jinnah House attack.
However, Shahrez’s family and friends insist he was not even in Lahore that day. They say he was on a family trip to Chitral from May 6 to May 12. And provided pictures, videos, and WhatsApp messages as proof. The metadata of these files, independently verified by The Current, supports their claim. His father said Shahrez was “picked up” in front of his wife and children, calling the arrest an “abduction.”
IK’s arrested nephew in Chitral has now become a trending topic, with PTI leaders and supporters condemning the move. Senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja said the arrest proves there is “no rule of law” in the country. He added that Shahrez lived openly in Lahore for over two years. And was never summoned before, questioning the timing of this sudden action.
Political observers see the arrest as retaliation against relief granted to IK by the Supreme Court just a day earlier. PTI leaders argue that the case is fabricated and politically motivated. Meanwhile, Shahrez has been placed on an eight-day physical remand by an anti-terror court.
This arrest has fueled further political tension, with critics saying it highlights selective justice and deepening divisions in the country’s legal system.
