Recent sectarian clashes in Haryana, India, have caused tensions to escalate, leading to a situation where right-wing extremist Hindu groups from Hisar, Haryana, gave Muslims a two-day ultimatum to leave their homes.
The situation has raised concerns over discriminatory policies against Muslims in the country.
Outspoken Indian journalist Rana Ayub tweeted about the incident, highlighting the threatening slogans chanted by Hindu groups. Amidst the violence and communal clashes in Nuh district, hundreds of thousands of Muslim migrant workers have been forced to flee the region. Hindu fundamentalists have targeted them, threatening violence if they do not leave.
Curfews in Nuh have limited the options for workers to escape the violence, but many have been seen heading towards Alwar or Sohna, carrying small bags as they seek safety.
According to the Times of India report, the authorities have taken measures to address the situation, with 202 people arrested and 80 taken into preventive detention in connection with the recent clashes. State Home Minister Anil Vij stated that 102 FIRs have been registered, with half of them in Nuh alone, and the rest in other districts, including Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal.
The unrest has spread to urban neighborhoods near New Delhi, with riot police patrolling the affected areas. The clashes began when mobs targeted a Hindu religious procession in Nuh, resulting in violence and property damage. Arson and vandalism attacks followed in nearby Gurugram, where multinationals like Nokia and Samsung have their Indian headquarters.
As of now, six people have been reported killed in the violence, and the situation remains tense. Haryana state chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar assured the public that those responsible for the violence would be held accountable and emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety.
